CØNTRA Makes Waves w/ New Heater EP “Same Old Story” via DUPLOC BLXCK TXPES [Q+A]

There is no doubt that Denver-based bass producer, CØNTRA, has been making waves within the EDM scene with every release he has put forth recently. This is especially true for his latest heavy-hitting EP, Same Old Story, marking not his first but second release with the renowned dubstep label DUPLOC. Following his incredibly wonky CHOPSKI EP, CØNTRA, did not allow fans to catch their breaths with this new EP release, fueling the already massive fire his project has. Each of the 4 tracks on this new EP is filled to the brim with intense bass lines, and hard-hitting gritty synths, sure to captivate an audience.

“With the Same Old Story EP, I wanted to create a collection of tunes that encompassed more of an original dubstep vibe, along with a bit of grit and lofi quality to them. Though every track is a bit different in nature, I find I’ve really started to hone in on a particular signature in the pursuit of creating them. It’s been a big goal of mine to work with the legendary Duploc label, as every artist on there are some of my favorites in the game, so it was quite an honor to be asked to release on their new sister label, BLXCK TXPES.”

Tunes from Same Old Story have been rinsed all over by Ternion Sound and like artists, intensifying the hype for today’s release on DUPLOC BLXCK TXPES. CØNTRA continues his journey into the spotlight playing festivals such as The UNTZ as well as a number of upcoming shows, festival sets, and more. The hype for this artist is real, so do not sleep on this absolute heater of an EP! Make sure to head over to check out our exclusive Q+A with CØNTRA to dive deeper with us on why the Same Old Story EP is definitely a certified bop!

Diving Deep w/ CØNTRA

1. You often play the violin on your records, what made you decide to incorporate elements of classical music into your tracks?

There actually isn’t any violin in this particular EP lol mostly because I wanted to do some more club oriented/strictly banger tracks. I do occasionally incorporate the strings into my productions though because I love the interesting live aspect that it brings to my shows. I personally believe a performance is way more hype when a DJ is able to do something more than just mix. Living here in Denver you get a bit spoiled with the amount of bass shows so whenever I see an instrument incorporated into a set, it gets me way more intrigued.

2. Over the course of your career you have obviously progressed as an artist in many ways, what did you pull inspiration from for “Same Old Story”? Were there any new elements brought forth that altered its creation in comparison to your previous releases?

For the title track ‘Same Old Story,’ the tune came pretty naturally to me as I’m a huge reggae fan. Me and my long time friend Alex Laux used to jam guitar and sing/rap on our porch in college all the time. We actually have a decent amount of produced tracks together as well. Going back to the literal “roots” always seems quite natural to me 🙂

As far as all the other tracks go, I feel like the common theme would be that they all contain some form of hip hop. It’s funny cuz I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a massive hip hop head but I do really love adding those vocals into bass music. I find it always brings more life to the tune and based on the lyrical content, it’s a great way to guide myself in a particular creative direction.

3. Which track from “Same Old Story” do you connect with the most and why?

I probably connect most with “Two Clips” solely off how much I love mixing it in my DJ sets. I find it can almost blend in with any tune lol I’m also just a huge sucker for female rap vocals in dubstep.

4. What’s next for the Contra project? Any shows or upcoming releases for fans to be excited about?

I have a release on a very cool compilation next month, a single with Tripzy Leary in September, and the month after that, a 4 track EP on Wheel & Deal Records. This one will include some dank collabs with The Widdler and Morning High. I’m currently sitting on so much music right now so I’ve been making it a goal to release new stuff every month this year!

HEXED X Ghost Lotus Get Rowdy w/ New Track “I’m A G”

Those who have heard the heavy-hitting sounds of bass wizards HEXED and Ghost Lotus on their own know the absolute madness these artists can create. With each having a sound design like no other, one can only imagine what would happen if they produced a track together. Well, the wait is over because today, HEXED and Ghost Lotus have teamed up to create the absolute insanity that is their new track “I’m A G”. There is no shortage of deep booming bass, wubby synths, and gritty vocals that makes this track the grimiest and most daring tune these artists have put forth this year. “I’m A G” is truly a track that breaks all rules and genres, featuring elements of Trap, Hip/Hop and even Dubstep influences that can be heard from start to finish. WE are definitely going to be blasting this one out for the forseeable future. Let’s take a deeper dive into why we are calling “I’m A G”, a certified bop.

”Reflecting on this project made me realize how far I’ve come as an artist, but reminds me this is only the beginning. This project is a statement from me to let listeners know this is my time. I am going to give music everything I’ve got and see how far much further I can evolve.”

1. How did you decide to get into making music? Was there a particular event in your childhood/life that made you stop and realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?

I originally liked to play sports. One day in 2013, I decided to go see Knife Party at Sunset Music Festival because they were one of my first favorite Electronic acts. I heard them perform the song “Power Glove” and I was blown away. I never saw a performance so incredible, I reconsidered everything from then on. I previously was a painter and this was a much more eye opening and exciting way to express myself.

2. You live, breathe, and eat bass music. Do you listen to anything else when you are away from everything? What would your top 5 non-bass artists be? Top 5 bass artists?

I love Bass music, but I like to incorporate other styles in my production that I find interesting. I enjoy Rock, Metal, Rap, R&B, Electronic, Downtempo, Ambient, Reggae, Pop and even some Country. These are some acts I currently really like, but in no order:

All time Non-bass music artists:

  • Mac Miller
  • 03 Greedo
  • City Morgue
  • Slim Shady/Eminem
  • Trippie Redd

Bass Music Artists:

  • Space Wizard
  • DirtySnatcha
  • Peekaboo
  • blurrd vzn
  • Eater

3. What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned since you started making music? Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring producers hoping to follow in your footsteps?

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is to take care of your ears. I always wear ear plugs and I am thankful to have learned about it when I was young. I used to go front row at shows with no ear plugs when I first discovered Electronic music. If there is one thing I have learned, you better take care of your ears and health if you want to last a long time.

4. What’s next for your project? What plans do you have in the near future that you hope to accomplish as “HEXED”?

Next for my project, I hope to take things to a whole new level. I’d like to release music on dream labels that I never imagined possible, collaborate with artists I have always dreamed of working with and continue developing my sound to where it becomes undeniably unique. I have a new EP we plan on releasing this year and several other tracks I am very excited about. Just so thankful for all the people that work with me and have supported the HEXED project to get where it is now.

Feelmonger Takes Us On a Journey with New Mix “Viva La Vibrant”

Feelmonger Takes Us On a Journey with New Mix “Viva La Vibrant”

Here at Headbang Society, we are always trying to find new music that makes us feel more than we have ever felt before, whether it be new music or some of our favorite classics. Today North Carolina based bass producer, Matt Pham, better known to many as Feelmonger has created the perfect mix designed to make us feel as much as we possibly can. This all original unreleased track mix, “Viva La Vibrant” takes us on a journey through many different soundscapes, moving us through brilliant high energy and  tunes. This entire mix definitely has an absolutely vibrant aspect to it as its title suggests, that makes us want to keep it on repeat. Let’s take a deeper dive into why we are calling this heater of a mix “Viva La Vibrant”, a certified bop.

“Viva La Vibrant is about living life, you guessed it, vibrantly. Vibrant is defined as “full of energy and enthusiasm,” “quivering, pulsating,” “bright and striking.” The tracks that make up this mix dive deep into those ideas and hopefully will let people FEEL as much as possible. Life and the moments that make it up are special, and VLV is a reminder to myself as much as everybody else that you just have to be in the moment. Dance harder, love deeper, cry uglier; whatever you’re feeling, let it consume you.” – Feelmonger

  1. What has been your favorite memory this far having been part of the EDM scene prior to successfully launching off as a reputable bass artist?

My favorite memory so far? Oof that’s a tough one. I can’t really pick and choose an individual memory from the EDM scene. A lot of my love for the scene comes from how I feel at the shows, the people I meet and the interactions I have. But if you’re making me pick a singular event, it would have to be the insanity that commences post-shows at the Embassy Suites in Hampton, VA.

  1. In a perfect world, where do you see yourselves 2 years from now and why?

In two years, I want to have a condo on the moon, with Elon Musk as my landlord and neighbor, and only come back to earth to play shows at Red Rocks and the Gorge. In all seriousness, if I could just drop the day job and focus on music 40+ hours a week that would be amazing.

DIVING DEEP W/ NIMDA

  1. What would you tell your younger self today knowing where you’re at now and what it took to get there?

I’d probably tell myself to care less and have more fun when it comes to making music, but also the more effort you put in the more you will get out of it. I spent the first 8 years of music making experience not really trying and also worrying too much about my releases not doing well, in reality I should’ve tried harder when it came to my production and stressed less about stats.

  1. If there was an artist you had the chance to collaborate with, who would it be and why?

I’d love to make a song with Svndman or Leotrix. Svndman is discontinued I’m pretty sure so lets say Leotrix. Leotrix is very good at a wide range of styles, I think my obnoxious approach to music would combine well with his sound design knowledge and thought-out approach to that kind of riddim sound. (Even though I pretty much never make riddim)
