Incredible experimental bass duo, Mlotik are back at it again, this time joining forces with producer Zlen to bring forth their new collaborative EP “Ghost Room”. As an absolute journey for the ears, this two part collection of tracks showcase the combination of these talented artists’ sounds, guiding us on an expansive auditory trip that brings us familiar and new, exciting soundscapes. Our premiere today off this amazing EP, “Calypso”, transports you directly to the ocean side with beautifully constructed textures and deep bass melodies. ” Calypso was the first song to come to fruition in the Ghost Room chapter. The melody was written in an iphone app called Oval Synth, which resembles a pan drum where you can play with unique scales. The composition developed a curious, lighthearted energy which intrigued us. This song also helped solidify the creative dynamic that each of us bring to the table and guide the vision for the rest of the project.”

1. What was the inspiration that helped push you into wanting to pursue a career in music?

A: “The three of us had individual journeys regarding the decision of pursuing our passion. While somewhat different, they are largely the same. 

Initially, what drew us in was our interest and curiosity for music of all types. With electronic music specifically, the community played a large role in our lives early on. Being apart of something that was evolving and bigger than ourselves. Being surrounded by positivity. The blend of envelope pushing music and production resulting in unique, impactful experiences. Transitioning from dj’ing into producing, we fell in love with the process. Having something to focus on and get better at everyday gave us a sense of clarity we had previously been lacking”

2. If there was one thing you could change for the betterment of society, what would it be and why?

A: “Boiling it down to just one thing proved to be quite difficult. Evolving out of a monetary market economy seems paramount. Potential solutions include transitioning into a resource based economy, which could alleviate inflation, and in turn, the deliberate withholding of social efficiency. Some benefits could include paid mental health days for workers and government provided therapy for all. Decreasing financial stress could lead to less crime and happier individuals.”

Tylr – “I remember when Z-Dougie first listened to the original idea of Deeper, and we both knew we needed to create this together. From there we spent months fine tuning and working really hard on this one and I’m super excited to have finally given it a home on Wavecraft. We hope you enjoy the tune as much as we do!”

TYLR-

1. What has been the biggest difference you’ve noticed when first starting off as an artist vs now after experience playing events , doing releases etc?

“The biggest difference for me was really understanding the sound and what it does for people. It didn’t take me until my first few shows last year to fully see how people were receiving my music, and that was huge for me. Whenever I am working on new tracks now, I am always taking that into account.”

2. In a perfect world, where do you see yourself in 2 years from now and why?

“In 2 years, I hopefully see myself being able to make and play music full-time and to fully sustain myself from it. It’s been a dream of mine ever since I started to be able to fully commit myself to my ultimate passion. Consider this a manifestation!”

Z-Dougie:

1. What has been the biggest difference you’ve noticed when first starting off as an artist vs now after experience playing events , doing releases etc?

“I don’t need anyone’s approval to feel confident anymore. I used to need outside opinions to make a final decision, but now I know what my art is supposed to be. If someone doesn’t like it then it’s just not for them, and that’s okay. It’s a way easier mindset to continue moving down my own path instead of getting stuck trying to figure out how to make others happy with my art.”

2. In a perfect world, where do you see yourself in 2 years from now and why?

Touring as a bass act and making Hip-Hop records. Z-Dougie is heavily inspired by Hip-Hop and I love making beats. The idea is to make rap hits and have the rights/files to them so I can make all the remixes and edits I like for my Z-Dougie sets.

1. Is there a message you would like to portray through your music, and if so, what would it be? 

–

That music has the power to connect and shape culture, and with that I try to use positive messaging within my music.

2. What are the inspirations that helped push you into wanting to pursue a career in music ?

–

From a young age, music has affected me so deeply, from going to punk shows at 16 in NYC to remembering hearing Pink Floyd  for the first time. To this day, every time I hear a new piece of music that touches me, it’s like a world of color erupts in my head.  My natural hunger for music drove me to seek new sounds. At first it bought me to the music of the UK where I fell in love with the early vibes of sound culture and labels like DMZ and others. It lead me to open up one of the first distribution companies to import this hard to get music. From there we wound up running Fuel Records USA which helped bring artist like Tipper to America. For me music is always about pushing myself to explore and be open to new sounds.

One of Australia’s finest bass producers that has taken the scene by storm in both his country and now our, has come to showcase his newest heater of a track “How Bout”. Today Xserta, who is known across the “down under” for his drum and bass, has come out swinging with a weird and exciting new bass track that combines the grimey, dark soundscapes we love with some absolutely wonky rhythm. This track definitely will get you head bobbing as you travel through the unique halftime stomper as well as the rest of the “Parental Guidance Vol. 1” playlist. “ Forthcoming on PG Records first compilation Album – How Bout is a grimey halftime tune from Australian producer Xsetra that seemlessly progresses from wonky head nodding jam, to tipper-esque squelchy IDM. Whilst How Bout is driven by squelchy rythmic bass lines and formant filter “yois” it’s the air tight percussion and subtle dark sound scapes that really capture your ear and draw you in for more. The excellent sound design in How Bout is a prominent feature of all of Xsetra’s catalouge and if you go digging for more – you will not be dissapointed.”

Who/what are the biggest inspiration for the music you create today?

–

Sleepnet, Zound, Phace or anything on Flexout is my biggest inspiration. Definitely don’t just have one.

 What has been one of the most memorable career achievements so far as an artist and how did that impact you moving forward? 

–

I guess it would be playing shows at festivals with large crowd attendance. Nothing lifts you up more than that, seeing all those people moving to music you created is wonderful. It makes you want to make more music and progress further.

Right now, there are so many talented women who work throughout various roles in the music scene. The number of female DJs who are continuing to make waves with their stellar production and jaw-dropping music continues to grow each and every day, inspiring many throughout the community. One of these extremely talented ladies is none other than heavy hitting bass producer, Notlö, who’s “Outskirts” EP we get the pleasure of presenting to you today!  This entire EP stomps from beginning to end, bringing both the heavy downtempo and uptempo soundscapes we have come to know and love from this artist. Our personal favorite off the new release, “YOUALREADYKNO” is an insane collaboration from Notlö and bass wizard, BroMosapien that is not one to be missed. With an uptempo beat and a downright filthy bassline, this track has all the proper components to have you playing this one over and over again. Let’s take a closer look at why “YOUALREADYKNO” and the rest of this insane EP is what we like to call, a certified bop.

“As a queer woman creating heavy music, I’ve always felt I’ve been on the “outskirts” of the electronic music world. I feel so free while I’m creating, so I wanted to show my range with this EP. It’s a big tease of what’s to come with me and the NotLö project.”

1. “What does being a female artist in the EDM community mean to you?”

–

It means a lot to be able to represent a group of individuals that is rather small in comparison to men. However, I think the norm of not seeing as many ladies in the scene is changing. It’s crucial for us ladies heavily involved in the scene to inspire and help other ladies as much as possible to keep up this growth.

2. “Is there a specific message you would like to portray through your music, and if so, what would it be?”

–

My message is to show that anybody can express themselves. No matter the way you do it, just do not fear expressing yourselves. I want people to have fun and find joy with my music and performances. With that, I hope it sparks their creativity and the ability for them to express themselves!
