As many know, leap years are an extremely special anomaly that happens only once every four years, adding an extra day to the shortest month of the year. With its rarity, the day is almost filled with its own magic, warranting extra special celebration. There is no better way to encapsulate the fascination of this extra day than with an outstanding tune from none other than Tampa local bass producer, KPUFF. Those who have experienced the incredible heavy hitting experimental sounds that have emanated from this project in the past know the caliber of bangers that KPUFF puts out on a regular basis. He truly captured the whimsy of the leap year through his use of deep grimey dubstep sounds and drop switch up that will leave any listener wanting more. “This is an experiment that began in a darkening forest. The aim was to bring the music-making process to a new environment. Suddenly, I found myself in the middle of the woods with the dark rapidly approaching. With this track, I sought to capture that sensation of an imminent chase—a race against encroaching darkness—and all the mind games that come with the absence of light.”

You’re on your deathbed and you can listen to one last song, which one would it be and why?
 

Although my taste is constantly rotating in a multitude of directions (almost daily), the obvious answer here is “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. It has always been my favorite song of all time, even though there are many contenders these days. The dynamics and emotion are unmatched to this day. It goes from the deepest lows to the highest highs; musically, it takes you on every bit of a journey. And when those drums finally come in, it’s a feeling like no other – a ballad that quickly turns into complete rock and roll.

 
If you could change one thing about the electronic scene, what would it be and why?
 

 

I would really like to see innovation and uniqueness receive more recognition. We need to strive to push the boundaries and not get stuck in what works or what is hot at the moment, that is how things get oversaturated and collapse. There needs to be more thinking outside the box, especially with arrangement and sound design. And I hope to see the traditional boundaries of genres dissolved, with the primary focus being on creating music that resonates with listeners and evokes emotions.

 
If you had one message you could share with the world right now, what would it be?
 

Things are not always what they seem, especially with today’s technology. We need to try to put ourselves in others’ shoes and remember that our perspective is very limited to our personal experience. Everyone is living in a completely different story, and we need to do our best to understand others’ perspectives.

There are several household names in electronic dance music, however, there are few that have made the imprint that Liquid Stranger has. Bringing freeform bass to the forefront of the scene and distinguishing himself from others early on, Martin Stääf has had an incredible impact on not only bass music, but on the mission of music and live performances in general. From starting his notary label, Wakaan, and eventually expanding to his downtempo label Sskwan, he has continuously proven to be an inspiration in music. Perpetually improving his project and building upon the Wakaan label, he has created a legacy that will be ingrained in the scene’s history and will continuously elevate and inspire.

In similar fashion to Martin and his vision for music, the iconic Red Rocks Natural Amphitheater is possibly one of the most well-known and distinguished venues  within all genres of music, of which Liquid has chosen to host curated event Wakaan Rocks.  Wakaan Rocks showcases a smaller group of specially selected artists in an intimate setting that provides an ambiance like no other. For its second year, Liquid Stranger has something extremely special planned for attendees, debuting a new concept in which he performs 3 individual sets collectively dubbed the “TRINITY” concept; in which each set is geared toward a specified aspect of his artistry including a throwback, downtempo, and banger set. Each set will individually showcase fans favorite parts of the Liquid stranger project; featuring finely tuned visual production that will allow attendees to fully immerse themselves in the performance and their surroundings.   1. As an artist, you’re extremely well known for having outstanding visuals that both elevate and compliment your set; Without revealing too much, what’s in store for attendees in terms of the audiovisual experience being presented at WAKAAN Rocks II? Any VJ/DJ pairings that fans should be excited about?

–

A: My team and I are currently working on pairing visuals for each specific set – its very important to grasp as many of the human senses as possible during a performance. We put a lot into our visuals with several designers and creators; We are working on time coded visuals to sync different events and visuals with the music and bringing in different production components to make it a more unique experience. We plan to try a new video wall which works with the lights alongside and behind to create a new visual sense. My content is created by a multitude of different animators and content creators to create a new and amazing visuals for this show and that is something we constantly work on — Expanding our library of content.

  1. As someone that has continually pushed boundaries within the scene through both the Liquid Stranger project and WAKAAN label, do you feel that this event will be a turning point for WAKAAN in terms of innovation and furthering your overall vision?

–

A: The main thing with the Red Rocks show and a turning point is the fact I will have 3 different unique sets.  I have been an artist for a very long time and worked with a lot of different genres and moods of music; Music is an emotional language and there is always too much music and too little time during a 1 hour set. A lot of requests for things that for one or another reason will not fit but this time I wanted to give my fans 1 opportunity to see the full spectrum of what the Liquid Stranger project is in one night. This is a one time occasion and I wanted to give my followers this opportunity.

  1. What advice can you give to your supporting artists making their Red Rocks debut; any tips or tricks that could positively affect their experience? Along with this, Is there anything you wish you had known prior to your first time playing Red Rocks?

–

A: Advice for supporting upcoming artists is always the same – find your own unique voice. Stay true to your vision; Where as a skill set and talent is skilled over time is important – the most important quality for any artists or entrepreneur is WILL POWER. Know that you are special and that your unique expression is needed on this planet – that’s why you are here.

“I have learned that in my short time here on this planet, we all struggle. So why not share the struggle? What lies beneath is the most important and that is something we all share. The subconscious is something we can’t run from. The central nervous system. ‘Beneath The Surface’ is our album and its on the way. Don’t Step  is a statement. The First single from this album to proclaim our statement and revel in the fact we have something to say. This is not just our journey but connected is something we can all be tethered to when we learn that we share similar patterns of existence. The path, the struggle, the pain, it exists in all of us.”

You’re on your deathbed and you can listen to one last song, which one would it be and why?

WILDABEST: Curse this question, I could answer this 197 different ways haha. Kidding of course, it’s just that our taste’s not only change like the weather (more like increase like in volume), but also we are swayed even with genre by the day, like our mood. I’m just going to throw a dart at the wall and say FKJ – Leave My Home,     I was going to say Thriftworks – ‘Terry’s Big Dab’ but, considering I’m on my deathbed, I think it might send me into a hallucinogenic spin and said bed would become quite soiled with excitement.

Torbjørn: Whatever song I produced most recently. I don’t know why but I can listen to my own newest beats on repeat for hours.
 
If you could change one thing about the electronic scene, what would it be and why?
–
WILDABEAST:I would say: being more inclusive. I’ve always gathered that the best way to learn is by first hand experience and from direct processes of cultivation wherein encouragement is high and ego is low.

Torbjørn: Everyone who argues endlessly on EDM twitter should get their own exclusive festival where only they can perform and attend.
 
If you had one message you could share with the world right now, what would it be?
–
WILDABEAST:Be kind but work hard (and that includes to yourself). To me, there are always areas to improv upon. To be good is alright, but to be great is nearly impossible, and so that is where the great struggle lies. If mediocrity is somewhere in accomplishing the 0-90%, we aim to be in the 90-97% always trying to better ourselves regardless of what it is; in our personal lives like our family or relationship/home life, in our friendships, in our music, in our theory and understanding, in our knowledge of production and programming, in our instrument and personal development of it, in the work area, in marketing or business etc there is always area for improvement and this has been the motto moving forward here for some time. To always be pushing, always working (and still giving yourself a break and a pat on the back too) is how we try our best to progress and keep pushing this forward. The hardest part is just that, the last 3% is nearly impossible to accomplish. The 97-100 percentile is the hardest, to become near perfect or at least getting close to it, is truly difficult; either way it keeps us driven and on that path of moving forward.

Torbjørn: Back to the Future 1 & 2 are perfect movies and should be protected without reboots at all cost. No but seriously, believe in yourself more that everyone. You owe it to yourself to be your own biggest fan, and to never give up even if your path to success is manic and ugly and difficult. It’s okay to fail over and over again, just don’t stop until you succeed. Imagine if Robert Zemeckis gave up after getting rejected by Disney and every other film company that turned him down? I’ll tell you what would happen, we would have no Back to the Future 1 or 2 and that’s not a world that I want to exist in. So be like Robert Zemeckis and don’t give up on your dream no matter what.

We love it when fresh new faces come from the depths of the underground into the spotlight. The brightness Seth David has been radiating these past few months is currently unmatched. Having banger after banger catching the masses’ attention to crushing it on tour with Sippy and Smoakland, the future for this upcoming bass act could not be brighter. He is now here to further solidify his spot amongst the bass giants as one to keep a close eye on. Today we have the honor of premiering his newest single OH!, a powerful vocal-infused high-energy dubstep banger that is going to leave people in awe. Now it’s time to take a deeper dive as to what makes this track what we like to call, a certified bop.

“OH” brings me back to the “glory days” of dubstep in the early 2010’s…I used to love how emotional dubstep songs felt while at the same time being heavy and aggressive. I’m hoping this track can stand the test of time and give listeners that little hit of nostalgia even though it’s brand new.
